Kitchen lighting guide
Light your kitchen in layers
The best kitchen lighting ideas use more than one kind of light. Task lighting under the wall cabinets lights the worktop where you prepare food. Convenience lighting inside cupboards, larders and drawers helps you find things. Mood lighting along the plinth, under the worktop edge and around the island adds depth in the evening.
Sensio designs LED kitchen lighting for every one of those zones: under cabinet lights, LED strip lights, profiles, plinth lights, and the drivers and sensors that run them.
Plan your kitchen lightingKitchen lighting ideas, zone by zone
Light the worktop under wall cabinets with spotlights or LED strip. Add strip under the worktop overhang to make an island a feature, and plinth lights for a glow at floor level. Light cupboards, larders and drawers as they open, show off shelves and glassware, and use rechargeable lights or magnetic track to add light to an existing kitchen.

How to plan your kitchen lighting
1. Light in layers
Start with task lighting at the worktop, add convenience lighting in cupboards and drawers, then decide where mood lighting will add atmosphere.
2. Factor in the power
Run the wiring before the kitchen is fitted. Plan power to the wall units, base units and island, and where the drivers will sit.
3. Complement the design
Warm white suits wood and traditional kitchens, cool white suits modern finishes, and natural white works with most. TrioTone® lets you choose on the day.
4. Create zones
Put each zone on its own switch, so you choose which lights come on and when.
5. Choose the controls
Light cupboards as the door opens, switch zones together, or dim from a remote or the Link Sensio app.

Kitchen lighting FAQs
Find a stockistWhat are the best kitchen lighting ideas?
Layer three kinds of light. Task lighting under wall cabinets lights the worktop, convenience lighting inside cupboards and drawers helps you find things, and mood lighting on plinths, worktop edges, islands and shelves adds atmosphere.
How do I plan kitchen lighting?
Plan it at the design stage, before the kitchen is fitted. Decide which zones you want to light, where the power and drivers will go, which colour of light suits the design, and how you want to switch each zone. Our five step plan walks you through it.
What is the best lighting under kitchen cabinets?
Spotlights give pools of light and suit most kitchens. LED strip in a profile gives an even line of light with fewer shadows. Magnetic track lets you move lights later. See all under cabinet lighting and the under cabinet lighting guide.
How many spotlights do I need under kitchen cabinets?
There is no fixed number. Space the spotlights evenly along the run so the pools of light meet across the worktop, towards the front of each cabinet. For an even line of light with no gaps, use LED strip in a profile instead.
How do you light a kitchen island?
Pendants above the island are a popular choice for task light. Add LED strip under the worktop overhang to light the units and a breakfast bar, and plinth lights around the base for a floating effect. See worktop lighting and plinth lights.
What colour light is best for a kitchen?
Warm white suits wooden and traditional kitchens, cool white suits contemporary designs, and natural white works with most finishes. TrioTone® and CCT lights let you choose or change the colour. See the colour temperature chart.
Can I add lighting to an existing kitchen?
Yes. Rechargeable battery lights need no wiring, and the Affinity magnetic track lets you add or move lights under cabinets later.
How can I control kitchen lighting?
Set up zones on different switches, use door sensors so cupboards light when opened, or use a smart driver to control lighting from a remote or the Link Sensio app. Browse sensors and controls.
Do I need an electrician to fit kitchen lighting?
Sensio 24V lights plug into the driver, so fitting the lights themselves is simple. Any work on mains wiring, including connecting the driver to the supply, should be done by a qualified electrician.
Where can I buy Sensio kitchen lighting?
Sensio lighting is available through kitchen retailers, installers and our distributors and stockists. Trade customers can apply for a trade account.
