If you’re looking to upgrade your home lighting to a smarter, more flexible system, installing a WiFi Smart Kinetic Receiver is a great option. Let’s get into its purpose, benefits and how to connect it to a lighting circuit.
What’s the Purpose of a WiFi Smart Kinetic Receiver?
A WiFi Smart Kinetic Receiver allows you to control mains lighting circuits intelligently, specifically:
- It accepts a mains input (200-240V) and switches the lighting load, enabling wireless control.
- It supports a maximum load of 100W.
- It has WiFi functionality enabling the receiver to link to the Sensio app and become compatible with smart home platforms like Alexa and Google Home.
- It allows you to use a wireless kinetic switch to control your lighting via the receiver.
Advantages of Using a WiFi Smart Kinetic Receiver
Here are the key benefits you’ll get by integrating this type of receiver:
Turn Any Lighting Circuit into Smart Controlled Lighting
As the receiver works with your standard mains (200-240V) input and plugs into the lighting circuit, you don’t have to start from scratch. Whether it’s ceiling lights, down-lights or a lighting ring, you can retrofit the receiver to make your existing lighting smart.
Compatible with Wireless Kinetic Switch
The Wireless Kinetic Switch is a clever addition as it uses the generated energy of you pressing the switch to produce power (no batteries required) and send a wireless signal to the receiver. The major advantage of this is that you don’t need to chase any wires to install the switch, you get full wireless flexibility and you can pair up to ten switches to one receiver! Please note, do not use with a wall dimmer switch.
App & Voice Control Integration
By linking the receiver with the Sensio App, you get smart-lighting features such as dimming, scheduling, grouping lights and voice control via smart home systems like Alexa or Google Home.
Future‐proof & Scalable
Once the receiver is installed, you can scale your lighting! For example, add more lights to the same circuit within load limits, group rooms in the app or integrate other smart home devices.
How to Connect WiFi Smart Kinetic Receiver to a Lighting Circuit
View full installation guide here.
- Isolate the power - Switch off the relevant lighting circuit at the consumer unit and verify the circuit is dead via a mains tester.
- Access the lighting-circuit wiring - Find the point where your light is connected to the main wiring and identify the live (L) and neutral (N) conductors. As the receiver is already double insulated, the earth wire is not needed for connection.
- Integrate the receiver - The receiver can be securely placed using the supplied 3M tape and screw, then it is typically wired inline: connect the mains live (L) and neutral (N) into the receiver input, and the receiver’s output live and neutral to the lighting load. Refer to the installation manual for the exact wiring diagram.
- Ensure the load is within limits - The maximum load is 100W. If your lighting load is greater, you must upgrade the circuit or choose a higher-capacity receiver.
- Mount the wireless kinetic switch - Install the switch in your chosen location and pair it to the receiver following the supplied instructions. To pair, press the button on top of the receiver, this will flash and then you can press the kinetic switch to complete connection. Please note, do not use with a wall dimmer switch.
- Set up WiFi and Sensio app - Use the Sensio app to connect the receiver to your WiFi network. Then link the receiver to the app, create lighting groups and enable voice-control via Amazon Alexa or Google Home.
- Test the installation - Re-energise the circuit and use the kinetic switch, the app and voice control to turn the lights on/off, dim, schedule and group your lighting.
- Finalise installation - Ensure all connections are secure, the receiver is mounted in a safe location and that cable management is tidy, then enjoy your new smart lighting!
In conclusion, installing a WiFi Smart Kinetic Receiver presents a highly practical way to modernise your home lighting. You benefit from the flexibility and convenience of smart control, retain your existing lighting infrastructure and integrate effortlessly into voice-assistant smart home systems. With a wireless kinetic switch and the Sensio App, you turn standard lighting circuits into smart ones with minimal disruption.
